If the square of an integer is increased by twice the number, the result is 168. What is the number?

Let the number be $x$ , then the square is $x^2$ and twice the number is $2x$ .

So, “the square of an integer is increased by twice the number, the result is 168” gives $x^2+2x=168$ .

Thus, $x^2+2x-168=0\Rightarrow(x-12)(x+14)=0\Rightarrowx-12=0$ or $x+14=0\Rightarrow x=12$ or $x=-14$ .

Therefore, the number is 12 or -14.
