    \log a-\log (a-1)=\log 3
    apply the laws of logarithm
    \Rightarrow \log (a\div (a-1))=\log 3
    cancel out log
    \Rightarrow \frac{a}{a-1}=3
    cross multiply
    \Rightarrow a=3(a-1)
    \Rightarrow a=3a-3
    collect like terms
    \Rightarrow 3a-a=3
    \Rightarrow 2a=3
    \therefore a=\dfrac{3}{2}
