This concept will be better understood if we convert the ratios to fraction.

Thus, $8:7\rightarrow40:x$ becomes $\dfrac{8}{7}=\dfrac{40}{x}$ .

Using the concept of equivalent fractions, we multiply both the numerator and the denominator of the left hand side by 5 to get $\dfrac{8\times5}{7\times5}=\dfrac{40}{x}\Rightarrow\dfrac{40}{35}=\dfrac{40}{x}$ .

By comparison, $x=35$ .
