Let the number of books the second person bought be $x$ , since the sum of the books they bought is 10 and the first person bought 4 books, we have $x+4=10$ .

Subtracting 4 from both sides gives $x+4-4=10-4\Rightarrow x=6$ .

Therefore, the second person bought 6 books.
